Regarding the categories....

I don't think we're going to have enough "contestants" to allow for specialized categories. I propose taht everyone is allowed to "submit" any kit EXCEPT a bug-out-bag. I think we should have a "Bug Out Bag" competition at a later date. This might get others interested in being prepared. Hopefully this thread will start the ball rolling.

For this "competition" I think you just need to specify what your kit is. I propose the following "types" of kits:

Every Day Carry Kit (EDCK)
Personal Survival Kit (PSK)
Get Home Bag (GHB)

These are all smaller than "bug out bags", but can be fairly comprehensive in their scope (I'm looking at you GHB).

Using the three "types" above I think basically every type you listed can be covered (but in a less specialized way).

I really don't want to influence people's creativity. That's why I'm trying to generalize small(er) kits.

I developed my submission over the weekend, but it'll take a bit for me to get the pictures off my phone, descriptions written, etc.

Architect's PERSONAL SURVIVAL KIT Submission

I "every day pocket carry" a Swamp Warden, Victorinox SAK, Light My Fire Ferro Rod, Leatherman S3 Flashlight and Streamlight Nano Flashlight. These items are on me whenever I'm outside my front door - without exception.

This kit submission is IN ADDITION TO the items above.

Architect's PERSONAL SURVIVAL KIT

This little kit is small enough (6"x4"x2.5") to be taken nearly every where I go. It always comes into my office with me, sits in my console when I driving places, etc. Basically, this is the "next step up in preparedness" from the EDC gear I carry in my pockets. If I have to go someplace that precludes me from taking my GHB - I still have enough gear to cover the survival basics: Fire, Shelter, Water, Navigation & Signaling.

NOTE 1: On Saturday I carried this bag on a 5.8 mile hike. It took me 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete the hike on paved State Park trails (very hilly - at one area the incline was 4 to 1). The pack weighs 24.4 pounds with (2) full 32oz Nalgenes.

NOTE 2: I also carry a full sized 40SW or 45Acp handgun with (2) spare magazines on my person. However, as with the PSK I feel this will draw attention away from the other gear so I omitted it here.

I will be building a kit and you've given me some great ideas. I also plan on taking the Wilderness First Responder class this fall and I hope THAT will will help me choose items as well.
