Even a portable generator of around 5,000 watts is nice to have.

Those Generacs are nice, but here in the boonies I would go with propane.

Those Generacs are nice, but here in the boonies I would go with propane.  I has thought about propane as well, but the natural gas is easier and less expensive. Then again if you ARE talking Self reliance then Propane WOULD be the way to go.

Natural gas lines can be ruptured, electric-controlled valves can go out due to an outage, etc. Hank Hill had it right when he said "Propane and propane accessories"!
