He hasn't been doing well for the past couple of years and was ready to go. At 97 his quality of life was going downhill and dementia was taking hold. He had more bad days than good days memory wise.
I was lucky enough to make it down to see him in June during his last few days of being completely lucid. Apparently after I left he didn't have many good days.

I believe it is harder on family than it was on him.

He was a huge part of all of our lives.

The good thing is he had a hand in raising a whole bunch of kids, grandkids, great grandkids and there is a crop of great, great grandchildren already.

Dementia is a horrible thing. I know thats one of the reasons he wanted to go. That and he has always been an active man. He told me he was tired of sitting in a chair looking out the window.
He wanted to be outside doing it instead of watching life go by.

My father in law has lost all his short term memory and will ask the same questions over and over. He will also keep taking things apart and mess up the computer in their house.

Grandpa would forget who everyone else was for long periods of time. He took a swing at Grandma because he didn't think she belonged in the house and wouldn't leave.
Ugly business since they were married 71 years.

I'm concerned for grandma since he passed. She is a tiny woman anyway but she must have lost 20lbs since I saw her in June.

Despite the funeral it was an enjoyable visit. The whole family got together and remenisced.
It was great to be back on the farm and watch the kids tearing around the farm having a blast just like we did when we were kids.

Grandma sent me home with Grandpa's turkey gun and trapping pistol as well. Both are well older than I am.

I'm going to get those cleaned up and put them to use next spring.

It was a nice visit and we were lucky that everyone made it for at least a day.

Plus my wife has given a thumbs up to moving back to the area when we retire.

I understand your concerns. my FIL was always angry my wife says and I always worry for her mom, he actually went outside and started beating on a neighbors truck with a rake. He is 89 and she is 87 and she is still very active.
