You don't need shotguns, or even an AR once you have a FAL/L1A1...............................................just get the Man's Man rifle. Like the Rhodies said, "Be a Man among Men."
Men you can't trust, women you can't trust, beasts you can't trust, but Bussekin steel you can trust

tried to google this but the answers on the first page seemed a bit random. something about a roll pin and something else.
so does the FAL normally have "last round bolt hold open" and if so how is the bolt released?

I think that's the link that confused me. if i'm reading it right it sounds like the feature is there but some FAL (or STG) rifles are modified. so I figured I'd ask here to clarify. it's a non-reciprocating charging handle so I'd think it has a last bolt hold open.
guess i could check youtube for a feature review but i have slow connection slow connection rigr now.

From what I remember the Brits did not want a bolt open feature so their rifles did not have it. Metric FALs do have it but some pins have been removed or disabled and in some kits, the pin that holds open the bolt was not put in. That link shows how to put in the pin. And the last picture shows the pin in place.

that link pretty much covered it. thanks!
I thought it was a simple yes/no question but it appears to be a FAL thing.

Yes easiest way to understand the BHO feature of the FAL/L1A1 is that every rifle (except for the very very very very last ones made by FN - and not exported) has a BHO. Each and everyone can be had to operate as a last round hold open or not. It is just a small pin that fits in the BHO body and projects into the magazine well and is then manipulated by the follower of an empty magazine. It was not an issue feature on the L1A1 here in Australia but was on the L2A1 here. Both my L1A1s were subsequently fitted with the pin so as to lock open on an empty magazine. It SHOULD not be used as a bolt release however, this is accomplished by "sling shotting" the charging handle...
