Good morning, knife people. (I love virtuovice.) Or maybe I should say knife-less people. No Mud Mutt yet. And no email from Busse about the Santaganzaa.

need some advice.
i'm wanting to send my deceased friends spouse and son some fishing gear. he always wanted his son to have good quality stuff to learn on but he's only 8 right now. i'm a bit disconnected when it comes to kids and i'm inclined to over do it.
so, do i send him the kind of stuff i would use and let him grow into it or do i get him something smaller and more for beginners?

makes sense ray. i know if his dad was still around he'd want him to learn on the better stuff but that would be with him coaching him. it'll be probably be good just for him and his mom to get out and have fun without all the extra challaneges.

Lazi, get him something of reasonable quality; the little "Mickey Mouse" sets with their plastic gears are cute...but junk! The more a child has to fight a reel the more he will grow unhappy with it. The easier you make it for him to use, the more he will be inclined to stick with it. That's something I learned with my own kids years ago. If possible, get him a reel with a couple of ball-bearings, as it will be MUCH easier to use. After all, don't YOU prefer gear that is easy to use?!!!?

You could get him a quality ultralight set up and he would still have a use for it when he grows up.

thanks for the advice...
just can't make up my mind if to send spinning reels or the old school spincasting reels that sit up top and have the button.
if it's spinning reels i would maybe send them a couple pflueger presidents like i've been using just with shorter 2pc rods. i'm sure they would figure it out but that may be overkill. if i send spincasting reels i'd maybe look at sending some zebco delta combos. i know a couple zebco 33's would probably be fine to start them off but i can't talk into those for some reason.
