Yes it is and it can brodcast on ham radio freqs also just keep in mind it is not lawfull to transmit without a license on many of the freqs but you can scan and recieve on all of them. what freq do you use at work?

All I think I would need is FRS and GMRS (?) capabilities. Although the ham freqs might be nice for listening. But the scanner portion would cover that, right? This whole comm thing is kinda Greek to me.

Yep it could scan them and it will pick up your work radios except of course the encripted ones. It has FRS and GMRS but dont discount the MURS it has 2 to 10 times the range potential.

I've never heard of MURS. I thought you were talking about Mars radios. Just looked it up, 2-10 X range? Could be useful.

Thats what I thought I have always been disapointed in off the shelf frs and gmrs radios, I am hoping this one will perform closer to my expectations.

Wanting NOAA for weather alerts for here. It's entering the storm season for us and we have already had one tornado on the ground about 20-25 miles away and a couple three funnel clouds spotted.
Weather alerts would be REAL nice.
