i've seen CMI M14/M1A magazines going for $19.99 online. with shipping it came out to be $23 or so which is pretty good.
seems like they are all but giving away the PTR91 magazines compared to the other .308 semiautio rifles.

Yes the aluminum Cetme/91 mags are dirt cheap but the higher quality steel mags will still run you 20+ dollars.

Dsarms 18" standard FAL with the only change being to remove the slip off dust cover and adding one that has a picatinny rail is a great option and a .308 in my arsenal.
My next .308's will be gunsight scout and s&w m&p10.
If I could just have one right now and budget wasn't issue I would build up a mega arms Maten. However they have hinted at something new for shot show. 308 is gaining popularity so might be good to wait and see what comes out after shot show.

I'm waking this thread up. Monday I'm dropping my FAL off to have the barrel shortened to 18" and to have a custom muzzle brake installed. I'm taking it to this guy: http://www.vandenbergcustom.com/rifles-main/falsAnd here's a pic of my rifle so you guys don't have to go digging through 13 pages of this thread:

Cant wait to see it.
I have been thinking i may need to get a PTR91 or an FNAR. The FN is my favorite but at almost 3 times the cost of the PTR its kind of hard to justify.
How much could I buld a good user FAL for? Dang it you guys are starting to sway me twords one.

I paid about $900 for this one last year, during the height of the insanity. It is one that someone built as a good user. I'm an FAL noob myself, so I'm not a good source of information. I was told to go to FAL Files and read, read, read. I read until my ears bled, and I barely know more than it did when I started.
Basically what I know is this: There are some good receivers, and some bad receivers....from several different manufacturers. But you can't go wrong with an Imbel. It's cheaper to buy parts and mags for rifles built on a metric receiver, but inch pattern rifles generally have a few features that some consider to be improvements over metric rifles. I realize this has nothing to do with how much it will cost to build a rifle, but I felt like I should share anyway.
People sell complete rifles in the FAL Files marketplace all the time. Also parts and parts kits.

I served some time in the military, and I didn't realize how much I liked the AR platform until after I bought an AK pistol. I can appreciate the simplicity, reliability, and combat record of the AK, but it just felt too foreign to me.
When I bought the FAL I felt the same foreign-ness (?), but it wasn't enough to turn me away. I really like the platform. I'm not convinced that I wouldn't prefer an AR-10 since I'm familiar with the AR, but I'm liking the FAL so far.
Zero malfunctions to this point.

He did some AR work for some guys I work with, and they highly recommended him. After looking at his website I saw that he works on FALs, too. I was emailing back and forth with Andy while I was shopping for an FAL and I mentioned Ed's name to him, and he knew Ed from FAL Files and also had good things to say about him.
I brought my finicky 870 to him. He got it fixed after twenty minutes of work and didn't charge me a dime. I couldn't believe it.
Best part......HIS SHOP IS FIFTEEN MINUTES FROM MY HOUSE!!!
