By law, when you are off work to serve Jury duty your employer must pay you the difference between the Jury pay and your normal wages. ie, they are supposed to give you normal wages less the Jury pay. If your employer balks at this, just report it to the judge.
I served on my county's Grand Jury for a period of one year. We had to go in occasionally and listen to the facts of a few hundred cases and determine whether the prosecutors had enough evidence to carry to court, and vote to that effect. I found it to be quite fascinating, actually. Grand Jurors get to hear the details of things going on in the community that normally aren't heard about.
