Wow Which- i was just looking at those conversions. Why are they no good ? Sure glad I didn't throw the $$$ away . Thanks ! I am not sure what Momaw met about " regulated" eating up alkanies? I do not disagree- I flat don't know. ?Do you know anything about these www.coastcutlery.com ? Thanks

The conversions I linked to have all the driver and circuitry built into the base of the bulb.

You didn't think I would steer you wrong did you?

About the murdering alkalines...

A voltage regulated LED runs off a tiny solid state DC-DC transformer that outputs a constant voltage, making up the difference by drawing more amps from the cells. Lights that run off a single cell like the very popular 1*AAA or 1*AA keychain lights have to step up the voltage to drive the LED at all, while lights that run off several cells use the regulator to make sure the light output is constant.

Normally alkaline cells drop in voltage as they drain, and are only 1.5 volts right at the beginning. Then they drop lower until whatever you've got plugged into them stops working (usually less than 1 volt). In an unregulated light, the light gets dimmer and dimmer as the voltage falls. In a regulated light, the light stays the same brightness because the regulator is pulling more amperage and converting it to volts.

The problem is that alkaline cells have less capacity the harder you push them. An AA cell being drained at 500 milliamps will last less than half as long as a cell that's only being hit for 250 milliamps. Much less. Which is why a single set of AAs will last five years in your TV remote: the demand on them is tiny. Voltage-related LEDs murder alkaline cells because they hammer them hard for lots of amperage, and alkaline capacity nosedives when they are forced to give lots of amperage.

This is a non-issue for rechargeable NIMHs. NIMH only wants to give up 1.2 volts, but it will stay at close to 1.2 volts until the cell is nearly dead. They also do not mind delivering very high amperage: their "run time" is not adversely affected by how hard you push them. A 2000 millamp-hour NIMH AA will give you 2000mah whether you are pushing it for 2 amps or 0.2 amps.

(This is true up until the point where you get so ridiculous that they overheat and melt.)

So. I'm not a fan of V-regged LEDs. They waste alkaline capacity, and are unnecessary for NIMH (and lithium). Unless, as above, you have a tiny light that only uses one cell and needs to step up the voltage.

for sure!

its like if you use your cameras LCD screen it drains batts, but it drains alkaline even more. thats why you see these new "digital alkaline" batts...higher amps.

Great explanation. BTW- I picked up some of those NIMH batteries that don't drain as quickly. Mine used to drain if I left them sit in no time at all. The new ones stay good for a year they say which is way longer than I need. Thanks for the tips

I must say I wondered why they cost that much. Naw- I never doubted for one dim second . Thanks for clarification

I'm unconvinced that "super alkaline for digital devices" cells are really any better, or at least enough so to justify their price. The only disposable AA that's going to pull its weight in a camera is the lithium type, and they are very expensive. Really the only reason to use disposables in a camera or similar device is because your NIMH's are already drained and you need juice desperately, cost bedamned.

Are you using the new NIMH in your flashligts/ headlamps also ? Thanks

I use a P3D from Fenix and get my CR123 cells from battery junction. Less than a buck a pop for them there and the Titanium ones have treated me well.

ive only done small testing in the old radioshack i worked at and the digital device batts did take more pictures. Although, it wasnt enough to really call raising the price $2, and it wasnt very scientific as we only tested 2 pair of batts. i too was unconvinced (hence our holiday hijinx) and im not the kind of guy willing to sell something i havent tried myself. we did only try the radioshack brand.

a more solid test is my mp3 player. ive used it for about 3 years now and i know the duracell xtra or whatever does run my mp3 player 1 day longer than the regular ones.

I haven't got any of new low-self-discharge NIMHs yet.... The headlamps are burning alkaline for shelf life, and my 2*AA mini-mag has plain old NIMH. Which are, incidentally, probably more than three years old now. Since we started switching a bunch of stuff over to NIMH where possible, I've only killed one pair with an accidental short circuit where the wrapper wore through around the rim. The things just have phenomenal lifetime value.

I seemed to have great life out of the NIMH but no shelf life ? So- when you were talking about the low drain it caught my attention for sure. For my stuff that is " on shelf" ready for use- I have been using lithium. When I am remote- I have to go alkaline and just carry more at this point. Thanks for info- wish I could have helped with your bulb retro

well I finally did it, I switched from "windows" and am running Ubuntu! no more bugs! yaaaaa Linux!!

Way to go WhichDawg,

We are in the midst of switching the whole company to Ubuntu.
It's a pretty good operating system, and with lots of software apps
to power it.
I'm still running Windows at home, mostly just because I've been to
lazy to burn a dvd with all the stuff that I want to save, but one day!

Congrats Dawg!
