EMF,

Think EMF (electromotive force).

Think silver plating.

alright...
I'm sure it's about electircal current or something...
but i didn't understand a thing you said.

I was talking about electroplating.

It's just one of them chem class experiments.

Get a couple of alligator clips (like BFN), a salt solution (ionic solution), battery, some solid metal medium (in this case titanium), and another solid medium (aluminum).

What your basically going to do is added a very small layer of oxide coating. You going to run a current from a battery from the salt solution to the titanium. You need another material to keep the cycle going, foil.

One alligator clip will be attached to the titanium, which will also be in the salt solution. The other clip will be attached to the foil or metal. Which will also be in the ionic solution.

Next is the most annoying part. Getting the cathode and anode right. I just do trial and error. The ends of the alligator clips will be attached to either the + or - end of the battery. If you think about the flow of electrons it will make sense. Titanium is getting oxidized and will lose electrons. Electrons flow to positive, therefore connect clip to the positive end. The foil at the negative end. Always think what material is going to get oxidized. It will make sense.

The coating itself can be determined by the voltage that you use. Lower voltage will give you a lower oxide coating build up. More voltage, higher oxide build up and different color. But, after a certain amount of voltage the colors will actually cycle.

Try it your self, EMF.

Nick, the anodizing looks great!

I've always wanted a mini skirmish or mini ruckus, hmmm, which one?...

Nick, congrats! I love my mini Skirmish and carry it often. Cool job on the anodizing too!

I just got my Spyderco Manix today...good grief it's a big knife. The pictures don't do it justice

Thanks guys, Maybe Tommorow I'll try it again, this was my first time.

Things you need
* 1-3 Batts
* Coke (works better than the lemon juice I used)
* Aluminum foil
* Alligator clips
* Wire
* Dish or cup
* Obviously whatever your anodizing
-First You have to scrub off the oxidation that's already on the Titanium,etc (Titanium is easiest).

-I used a Scotch Brite pad until is was shiney and smooth.

-Put it in A cleaning solution/ Acetone works best. I used Alchohol

-Hook the Batts together as my Pic shows.

-Put aluminum foil in the solution and half out so the clip can hook to it. The more foil the better, when I first started I got more color from the end nearest to the foil.

-DO NOT touch the Ti with the foil!

-Hook the other clip to the Ti. Submerge in cola.

-Leave it in for 5 mins or so. You can take it out and check on it every once and a while it won't hurt it.

-If you use 1 Batt you will get a gold/ bronze color
-If you use 2 Batts you will get lighish blue
-If you use 3 Batts you will get the dark purple color I got

-NOTE: make sure you place the Ti right out of the cleaning solution to the
cola-It will oxidize quickly in air- Giving you a crappier finish product.
Mine doesn't look that good beacause It wasn't clean enough/ Was exposed to long.

-If you check on it and it is only gold/Bronze you need to leave it in longer NOTE: it needs to cycle through all the colors.

Sorry for the Crappy pics, It was even crappier outside

Sharp I did not acctually take Chemistry this year. I.E-I didn't know all the detales
Thanks Sharp for explaining.

plating is a reduction process, not oxidation. If you want to deposit metal, use negative charge. Positive charge will oxidize like an acid bath. Ideally the metal you are trying to deposit should be the material that your cathode is made of.

I really like them too but the full-size is gigantic for a pocket knife
