Silence is acceptance.
3x is excessive, have you asked them to cover the shipping charges?
As far as "happening too much"....out of ALL the knives made a handful are faulty. We here involved in the Busse Forums are just more vocal about our knives every time a scratch in the coating occurs, we take a picture....every time we hit a rock or nail...we take a picture. So it can seem like anything happening is an epidemic! Can you imagine how many other knives from other companies get returned for being defective?
We are vocal because we "use" our knives we do not pamper them. Any metal picked up by a Busse sighs because it knows it's been selected for rough duty.

I grew up in a time when unless you went custom your choices were pretty much limited to 10 series carbon steels or “Imperial Stainless Steel”. No one complained about edge retention because everyone had an oil stone and a steel in the shop in addition every outdoor store had oil and stone on the counter. Our knives were not always shaving sharp but they always seem to cut and whittle. When people either post pics or list the contents of there field kits I’m still surprised at how don’t include a some type of stone and steel. In this world of high tech steels I guess people don’t expect to have to sharpen there knives. Only the one with out a stone and steel worries about edge retention.

A very, very good point Bors. It takes little pack space to bring a piece of 400 grit sandpaper or an EZE-lap.

I worry about edge retention in smaller EDC knives or hunting knives. Big choppers are the polar opposite in that they should have toughness rather than retention.
This is the first time I have heard of this happening to a DFLE. I was under the impression that it was only a single batch of DFCG's that were at risk so this is quite worrying. Can you even get a replacement DFLE if it breaks? How long will it take and how much will the shipping etc cost? There was someone here who was waiting for months to get their DFCG back. If all you were going to get for your chipped DFLE was retail price - shipping would you be happy?

That totally sucks. Do not worry, Dan and Patti will take care of you.
I completely understand your frustration about sending back knives, both my CA and CGDF had to be sent back due to air bubble cracks(over $60 for the shipping and three month wait). However, the new CGDF is still more than worth the wait and frustration.
Just be patience with the Yard since they are moving to a new base of operation.

This is troubling to me, especially considering the following from the SYKCO tech spec page:
Penetrant Inspection - We Don't "Crack" Under Pressure! Scrap Yard Knife Co. uses a specialized liquid penetration inspection, which reveals surface breaking flaws by bleedout of fluorescent dye from the flaw.
The technique is based on the ability of a liquid to be drawn into a "clean" surface breaking flaw by what is known as capillary action. (Capillary action is the force that is a resultant of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension in liquids which are in contact with solids, as in a capillary tube.) After a period of time known as the "dwell", excess surface penetrant is removed and a developer applied. This acts as a "blotter". It draws the penetrant from the flaw to reveal its presence. Ultraviolet "black light" is used in darkened conditions to view the colored penetrants for any cracks, fissures, or other flaws.
What does this mean to you? It means your Scrap Yard knife will be free from microscopic cracks and fissures, invisible to the human eye under normal conditions. So, I guess all that doesn't mean a thing if there's an air bubble? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Our inspectors check the blades after heat treating. These air pockets do not show up on the "surface" of the steel and are often not exposed until after grinding. Even then they may not show up on the surface. Sometimes they show along the cutting edge, but not always. We have discussed the problem with the steel manufacturer and they claim that a few plates must not have been trimmed back far enough along the outer edges after the initial rolling. We are now trimming the outer edges ourselves and have not experienced any problems since we began this. The steel truly is remarkable. It is a shame that a few sheets slipped by the mill, but it has been completely out of our control. There should be NO future issues with this problem. The number of knives with this problem has been less than 1%. You have just been incredibly unlucky in this department. Dan Sorry for the problem. Please return the knife to our new shop location for replacement. Send it to: Scrap Yard Knives 11655 County Road 12 Wauseon, OH 43567

woohoo! you already finished the move, dan?
on a related note, to the air bubbles, not the moving, this is why I quench all my blades in mylanta when forging.
