Here is my psk and everything I carry with me on hikes etc.
as you can see I stick paracord everywhere
first the blades I carry, yard hook, oht, and griptilian for fuzzsticks

here is some of the bigger stuff, canteen with paracord strap, first aid in compass pouch, psk in pouch

I usually travel light in the Gorge and just use a Military Woodland Camo Vest



I wear Propper OD now, I did use to use a pair of woodland camo pants (worked great). In the Gorge, coyote brown's the only way to go. Jackets, I either use my Tan and Black striped Nike Sport Jacket, Marmot Gravity Jacket, or the Black Diamond Tan Jacket. Usually take a sweater a long, too. Boots, I use Garmont T8. Did have Hi-Tec and Magnum, but the T8s are the most comfortable

Cloak and I might need to get some Multicam for the Gorge. Right Cloak?

I keep a similar kit in this pack for EDC - more folders, less fixed blades. If I go out, I just toss the small kit in with the rest of the stuff in my pack. I EDC a Fenix L1D light as well - just pocket carried, but always with me.

My EDC outdoors rig, RMD in Okuden Kydex attached by MALICE clips to a MOLLE thigh rig. Its set up for a left hand carry at the moment, my RD7 has been riding on the right, and I'm ambidextrous so its no big deal.

My wilderness EDC pack



The contents are numerous, but some basic features: RTAK-II is rigged so I can draw it over my shoulder (and sheath it) without taking off the pack. SOG Seal Pup is strapped to the back. 100ft of Rope, about 5 climbing-grade carabiners. Figure-Eight descender. The left strap has a CRKT A.B.C. Hammond Tanto on an inverted draw. Two folders, ZT0200 and BM Griptillian are aviliable in pouches on the shoulder straps. 35ft. Of OD paracord on the outside, 100Ft on the inside. 5ft. of Nylon webbing. Other stuff



you can see how the shoulder draw works in this one. LOL and no matter what sharp claims, it was my idea!

Depends on what we want and how long we are out. Short trips 3-5 hours, we take fruit (pomelo, larger than a honey dew or cantaloupe) and cliff bars. Longer trips 6-9 hours, we take sandwiches (pb&j, roastbeef, etc), chips, cookies, various assortments of sweets. Of course, we always carry water. Sometimes we'll take fruit juices.

Clothes (shirt, pants, socks, underwear)

and/or ...

my tactical vest for when I really just want to be traveling quickly.

In the vest:

I can carry a water bladder, or turn it the container into a small pack and carry clothes, depends on how I feel, the outside weather, and how long we're gonna be gone. In the other pouches, I carry all the necessities for survival. Though, I'm constantly changing both the pack and vest to better suit my needs.

Thigh Rig (usually used in conjunction with just the vest)



The little pouch on the sheath contains: matches, band-aids, neosporin, whistle, compass, cotton fluff, and cotton swabs, all in a little baggy. The baggy can duplicate as a source of water by tying it over a leafy branch, evaporations and condensation will draw drinkable water ( no need to filter or purify) from the branch. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

It's one of those tight fitting ones that can act both as conserving heat and wicking away sweat quickly. I usually always will have this with me.

I am currently working on modifying and building a couple, or a couple dozen, small EDC survival kits.
Your gear has given me food for thought.

A tip for those who want to carry bags for this purpose is to use the thin plastic fruit/vegetable bags that you get free at the grocery to put your produce in. They are food grade plastic, and because they're so thin, you can compact several in a very small space. They're also free, which is another bonus.

sharp, I just got a cliff bar (just one... and for no apperent reason).. I really want to see what they're like and I never knew wawa had them so I got one when I saw it.

I'm gonna like... run around for a few hours with nothing to eat and try one.

I know the portly ninja and since he is a fellow canadian all that extra padding is important winter insulation. I am a bit on the well insulated side myself.
I was going to do some WW2 reanacting but I ended up looking a lot more like Herman Goering than Otto Skorzeny.

I try to carry the least amount of gear possible. A canteen ,my SS4 and my CS Norse Hawk(with some modds) and a bic lighter and decent LED flashlight was my basic kit last year. This year I may try the DFLE instead of the hawk and I have a couple knives to try out in place of the SS4 including the YKCG ,Spyderco Mule and Chris Reeve Inyoni.

I spend a lot more time on my quad than on foot though.

As for clothing I like a mix of canadian army surplus and good hiking gear.
Wool is by far my favourite material. It is way better than cotton and even better than the best of the hi tech synthetics. You can get really nice fine wool that does not itch. It also works while it is wet unlike anything else.
I am also going to get myself a coyote fur hoody one of these days. They have the perfect camo for our area and are warm and light weight. I hope fur makes a comeback. Until you have worn it you really don't know what your missing. Especially in cold weather there is nothing better.

I am also getting another one of those coonskin caps with the head on the front to wear on my trip to london.

Well, I ordred 100 ft of Paracord and a combat master sheath for my ASH, The sheath was back ordered and it has been about 3 weeks....
Right now I am giving the ASH-1 a really thin edge, I might post pics later.

EMF the knot was originally developeded by sailors so they could throw the line a good distance, If you were carring one around in your pocket you'd probibly get in trouble with the police since they can be considered a weapon. Especially in your state.

Very good point!! I always have a big one in my car and house. I change them with the seasons as well. I don't have a small one in my pocket at all times. Probably should since it is easy to be separated from your car, house or base camp. I have to rethink a small pocket kit - especially one that is airline friendly.

Half the fun is actually building your own (also cheaper than purchasing top of the line pre-assembled kits), plus you can "test" your gear in a controlled enveirnment to make certain it performs as claimed in case you "really" have to rely on it. -10 and a 35 MPH wind is not the best time to find out that sealed container of lifeboat matches has deteriorated over time and become totally useless for lighting a fire!

I currently have three PSK's.
The smallest is contained in an Otterbox brand small clear watertight case and while minimal, it holds more items than an Altoids type tin. Throw it in a cargo pocket or rain jacket and at least you will ALWAYS have the basics with you.

Next in size, I use a Blackhawk E&E bag (found it new for 8 bucks) that has a very generous belt loop/velcro backing. It holds all the essentials minus food/H20.

Lastly is my trunk kit that is basically a black expandalbe duffel that doesn't scream "tactical" or "survivalist nut case." In that I have enough food/H20/first aid supplies and survival essentials to make a tough situation not so tough.

A good comfortable size for carry in a pocket is one of those Plano fly boxes from Walmart. You can see pics from this thread from the Swamp: NEW!!!? EDC Pocket Kit Container

That looks like a pretty good box, Andy. I'm going to have to check that out. I'm pretty hard on pocket carry stuff, I wonder how sturdy it is over the long term.

Busse Kuk (OH YEAH!!!!!)
SFNO (I don't even have a medium sized fixed!!!)
Satin Jack (I guess an semi-upgrade from the RMD, thought I love my RMD)

The SFNO, Satin Jack Tac, and ASH-1 are all pretty similar blade lengths, between 6"-7". Blade shapes and thickness are somewhat different but I consider them mostly interchangeable as woods knives. The biggest noticeable difference for many folks will be the fact that each generation of handles has its own unique feel in the hand.

The CGASH-1 is a big handful of INFI for those looking for a "short" chopper. Get'em while you can. You know you need one in your PSK. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Nice idea for the case Andy. I think I would prefer a soft case though. I would have to deal with the water proofing though.

The main knife that I want is an SFNO. I just love the design. It's also not too thick and not too thin. The CGASH-1 have a strange straight/ fusion style handle that I really don't like. I'm sure they're good choppers, just not my style.

If I wanted a chopper I'd go for my FFFBM, it goes 2/3 of the way of whatever I'm chopping and then breaks it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

the bag is the cheaper than dirt $8 proteus ripoff. maxpedition's nice, but too expensive sometimes. i have a jumbo versipack on the way, but the quality of this copy is more than sufficient.

the suunto compass rocks. EDC depot, $7.

the photon x-light's a favorite, the photon quality and features for $6. brightness control, three strobes, SOS beacon, lifetime warranty. the county comm orange soled is great too, for $1. i also like the ares soled, which has the clip. i clip it over my ear on my beanie/bandana and it's a great hands free light for $1.50. you can see it clipped to the velcro retainer strap on the dfle sheath.

i never use the tinder quik, came with my SOL kit. same with signal mirror, duct tape, and whistle. all those components are better sourced from the doug ritter kit which, at the moment, is $21 at bladematrix.

I was just about to ask that, I'm looking into a maxpedition proteus, but that looks good too.

it feels solid, quality wise. i'd trade the molle straps on the back for a large flat for a map, notebook, tarp, or poncho.

i also have this one, which was $12 on CTD. not as good for organizing your gear but more comfortable with a bigger main compartment. works out well. one for the city and one for the woods.

I like how some of you include rope in your woods set-up. Of my crew, I am the only one who does on a constant basis.
I just picked up 50' of camo polypropeline 1200ib test rope for that purpose. Very light stuff.

I like those Doug Ritter kits a lot. I have one that I am using as a model to build my own kits, some of which have already been sent out to various friends.
I bought one of those SOL kits, but returned it. Many of the contents were defective, which annoyed me. The bag itself was pretty cool; I have been trying to find out where to get them.

I don't carry rope, just 550 cord. I can't think of a use that I'd need anything stronger.

On at least 2 occasions I can think of off-hand, we have had to climb down rock.
Otherwise, you are correct. 550 cord is too versatile for mere words.

Well, here's mine. It's coming along nicely but I need a good compass. Lost my army issue compass a while back so I'm shopping around. Other than that, I need water purification tablets and a couple of small things like fishing line.

Like I said, a work in progress. It's also small enough to attach to the child carrier backpack I use to carry my 3 year old daughter. It fits perfectly under the padded seat, right at the small of my back and rests there on a metal frame of the carrier where I fasten it with velcro straps. Both blades can be reached by reaching behind my back if there should be a need.

I have decided to upgrade my PSK to make it more manageable and easier to access. This will be an ongoing process and I’m sure the kit will change over time. For now, I have divided the kit into 3 parts:

1. The carry bag with loose items
2. Yellow Pelican 1040 case (medical supplies)
3. Blue Pelican 1040 case (field supplies)

It is possible to take the whole bag or just one of the Pelican cases, depending on the need. I will label the contents as per container:

Inside the Carry Bag (In columns from left to right):


1. 5 Clear plastic zip lock bags
2. 2 Trash bags of the strong flexible type.
3. 10 Feet of 550 Paracord
4. A stretchable thigh strap
5. 4 Tube Vaults:
a. Assortment of headache tablets, antacids and anti-histamine
b. Cotton balls and Vaseline for fire starting
c. 2 Spare AAA batteries for flashlight and some small cable ties
d. Medium cable ties
6. Yellow 1040 Pelican Case for medical Supplies
7. Flexible high grip gloves
8. Folders:
a. Small Gerber folder

10. Yellow waterproof match case. This contains a lens cleaning cloth
11. Blue waterproof match case - pencil wrapped in duck tape and paper

13. Good LED flashlight

There is obviously very little need to carry 5 knives into the wild, no matter where you go and how long you are gone (unless you want to). Having said that, it is an entirely personal thing. I like big strong knives because they can do big strong things.

My only suggestion is more than 10 feet of paracord and maybe use the blue/yellow match safes for matches/more tinder as your lens cloth/duct-taped pencil should remain plenty dry inside the Pelican case.

Some thoughts…I also carry trash bags and Ziplocs in my packs, but what I do is carefully fold up each trash bag, then put it in a Ziploc sandwich bag. This keeps it flat and neatly folded, and helps protect the trash bag against minor abrasions and small holes. The trash bags could also be used as emergency ponchos, and free up a bit of space in your kit for something else.

Also, you might want to replace the AAA batts with lithium AAA batts. They have a 10 year shelf life, weigh less, last longer in use, and work in cold weather. The only down side is the cost.

You might want to add some treble hooks. They can be used to snag fish in an emergency when they won’t bite. You could also add a small frog/fish spear. You also might want to add some really small hooks for bluegill etc. You can’t catch a little fish with a big hook, but you can catch a big fish with a little hook. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

As Andy pointed out, a #2 fish/frog gig ($2-3 at most outdoor stores) is an excellent way to feed yourself and requires very little skill other than patience.

Put 2 small wood screws in your kit to affix the gig to a shaft as these gigs are usually drilled with 2 holes near their base. I duct tape the screws inside the hollow of the spear. Cover the exposed barbs with cardboard/duct tape to avoid injury.

Just like anything else related to harvesting most wildlife, check your local fish & game laws BEFORE testing.

"Your Honor, I was only practicing my survival skills!" will probably not let you off the hook (so to speak).

I've been thinking about this specific point. It certainly makes sense to have such a tool if you have the space, but I have before done some fishing in South Africa with a sharpened stick into which I cut "barbs" with my pocket knife. Call it a home made spear. I guess my point is that I could add a lot more to the kit, but in reality I would like to remove a lot from it. Everything adds weight.

I guess it's something to think about some more...

Agreed, weight vs. usefulness is always a dilemma.

In my own on-person PSK (a Blackhawk E&E bag) I am very limited with space so I try to stick with the basics. good quality gear, but as spartan as possible.

I do but try to be a little redundant with certain items such as mutiple ways to get a fire going.

I live in rural eastern Kentucky so things like water are not as high on my priority list as there are many rivers/streams/creeks where I hike/hunt/fish.

Yes, you can also carve one if you want to take a little extra time. If you have the time and energy, you can also make nets from inner strands of paracord, or make fish traps using rocks or sticks as shown below.

Rainwalker, you are correct, it is a Maxpedition cocoon. It's held on the sheath with a MALICE clip and the hot pink 550 cord.

I bought a pencil case that looks a lot like that (same size and shape) from Walmart for like $2. You might want to check it out as a more affordable substitute.

Andy-yeah there is alike a 5 year thread over at lightfighter about those things, NOBODY in my area carries them though-and I trust teh Maxpedition to carry all that stuff alot more than wally world brand ya know?

Yeah, I thought the quality might be a concern, but isn’t Maxpedition made in China too? Or am I thinking of another brand? Anyway, even if they are both made in China, Max might be better quality. Be careful in thick brush. It might be possible that a thorn or something could catch on it, pull it open, and dump your gear out. That would suck. Maybe you could use a small ziptie through the zipper pull to the kydex eyelet to keep it from unintentionally coming open?

I will probably take a few other things that I didn't mention because they will change due to necessity for the time outside and for the change in time of year:

-Hats
-Base layers
-etc.

I also could strap some things outside the pack like what Pitman suggested: a cushion. I could also add a tarp. Though, again, that stuff changes with the season.

Don't know if I missed this or not, but some I think good advice. ALWAYS carry any prescription drugs you have in labeled bottles. ALWAYS! That way if you are stopped you can't get taken in (or at least shouldn't) for illegal drugs even if you have a script for them.

I had a seizure four years ago. Just one. But now I take Dilantin (the most common seizure medication) every day. Every pill is labeled "Dilantin".

This shouldn’t be a problem. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. First off, it’s against the law to carry a scheduled medication without a doctor’s prescription for it. That has nothing to do with a sticky label on a bottle from a pharmacy. It’s about a doctor authorizing you to take a medication for a specific problem. It’s not against the law to carry a pill around out of the bottle, just to do so without having them given to you from a doctor. Have you ever had a doctor give you a free sample of medication with your name no where on it? I have, lots of times. The label on the bottle is not the prescription.

Even if that were the case, the police should never have a reason to be going through your stuff unless they have probable cause. NEVER freely give consent to a search. You have nothing to gain, and everything to lose, even if you have done nothing wrong. They like to go “fishing” and try to find something to pin on you, under the guise of “If you have nothing to hide, you should have no problems with letting me search.” We are one of the few in the world with the RIGHT to refuse an unwarranted search. Many men have died for that right, why would you freely give it away? A sealed container in your possession (like a PSK w/ meds) can not be searched by the police, unless they have reasonable cause, a search warrant, or you allow them to.

Even if somehow the cops DID find a prescription medicine in your possession outside of the bottle, all you would have to do is give them your information & where the medicine was filled, and they can call the pharmacy and verify you have a doctor’s prescription for the medicine. If you do, no crime has occurred.
