Ever since da yoots burned up all my stash of carefully split fat lighter last December, I have missed it for fire starting. Fat lighter or fat wood can be found in old pine stumps and roots. That is the best stuff. But often, just some good heart pine will do the job. When nature takes out one of my pines, unless it is in the way, I just let it lie there and rot. I know that in a year or two, I can easily hack away the rotten outer part and get to some turpentine smelling fat lighter. So out back I went, in search of!
This area looked promising. I knew I had chopped down two dead pines here, one of them with my new DFLE. Not ready yet.

I noticed a pretty high tide. I was getting a nice cool breeze in from the thunderstorms across the river.

Enough of that. Back to my search.

Aha! In the middle of my property an old pine log I had moved off the trail two years ago.

After beating on it with my knife (this one wasn't cleaned up yet and handy), I found the heart pine core.

I can smell that turpentine smell. Good stuff. I carried it over to the chopping area and whacked off some bits.

I placed them around the old oak and whoosh! More fire!

I really like the looks of that BRKT golok man.
do you see it chopping about as well as a DFCG?

They are close, for sure. I prefer the DF for heavy chopping, but the little golok is a great yard knife. Any of my big knives will do this job on fat lighter. The golok was just handy and already dirty.

yeah, I'm trying to grasp it's chopping abilities.
sounds like it's a pretty good chopper for sure.
little pricey, but not too bad.

res handles can't be beat for all day chopping though, I must say.

thanks for your input.

Did I ever mention that the DFLE is my favorite chopper?

My brother calls it "morbidly obese wood". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Great pics Vic. I wish we had more Pine trees around here... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I wonder if Cedar makes good Fat wood? I've got more than enough of that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Horn Dog I love your pic's, the area you live in looks so different then here in BC.
I love BC and don't think I would ever move, but when I see the pictures you and others post, it reminds me of all the areas I need to visit before my end.

Keep up the good work and I really do love your yard

HornDog,
The more you keep talking about that DF of yours, the more I think I'm
going to have to bite the bullet in the New Year and find me one.

Great pics.
Cheers

Coyote,
Where abouts in BC are you from?
I live in Kamloops.
