I love my hammock. I just stretch a sil tarp over it for a quick shelter , tie on drip strings and I'm good to go unless its really cold. No really pesky bugs where I tend to camp so no need for the netting. But i would change it up a bit in the cold weather. I have no problems down to 45 degrees at night though. never tried it any colder.

That looks alright. Would you recommend it? the hammock? i like it plenty, but i'd upgrade to this if you want to camp with it. http://cgi.ebay.com/GRAND-TRUNK-ULTRALIG...b#ht_3680wt_796same weight as the bivy above, same price as the hammock and bivy two combined, but doesn't require a pad or bag. unless it's cold.

Thanks for the advice. For now I'm gonna suffer on the ground under a tarp. Cheap, rough and easy! I NEED more steel not more comfort. Hehe

You tie some yarn/550 cord several inches above where your tie off ropes meet the hammock material. The rain that comes down the rope runs down the string and drips to the ground instead of soaking into the hammock and getting you wet.
Yarn works really well since it soaks the water up. Just make it long/short enough that it doesn't drip back onto the material.

do you have a nice pad? hammock > ground any day.
i never use a pad and my bag is only $30. i never sleep a whole night through in it so i'm trying to leave bags behind entirely. i'm switching to blankets as nessmuck taught and bought a thermolite 2 bivy recently for when that's not enough.
