Patty and I drink bottled water all the time. We turn on the tap, fill our bottles and put them in the fridge to get 'em cold!

I'd start running a few miles a day, you'll be doing lots of that

Probably Marines.

Right now I'm doing one day of push-ups, one day of shoulder exercises (My main weak point) and one day of stairs (one hour).

That is a good start.

Now work in a weight routine that hits your core. Nothing sucks more than a heavy pack strapped to a weak core.

Run. Run. Run.

Without a strong heart and lungs, strong muscles won't be able worth a spit.

If the Marines are something you are looking at, pullups and use a lat cable after you can't do any more.

Using a pack for the stairs is good, but you should put on a 50 pounder and go for a long hike too.

Alright, I figured that was where I needed to go.

I absolutely can't run, it's the weirdest thing. I can sprint rather quickly and for long distances for my size (6', 220# and relatively out of shape) and I can hike for miles at a 3.5-4 mph pace with a 25 pound day pack or 40 pound waist pack, but whenever I try to run I get painful stitches in my lungs.

Another good exercise to prep for basic is to go for a trail run in boots. Most of your running will be in boots not "go fasters." What we call running shoes in boot camp.

I'll be doing a 81 miler this summer with a 40 in the New Mexico mountains.

What did you mean by a lat cable?

Push hard on your runs once the stitches hit. You can't stop when the hit, or you will never strengthen your diaphragm.
