Years ago before Columbine we were trained to wait and contain a threat. We would then call out SWAT if it was available. This is what happened at Columbine. But based on numerous mass shootings like Columbine and Beslan we changed tactics. Now we train the officers to throw out usual tactics used to clear buildings and go directly to gunfire and neutralize the threat quickly. Rarely will they wait for more than two and occasionally one will go in and take out the threat.

It makes for a far faster response, plus the sooner the area is made safe the faster victims can get medical assistance. Too bad it took such a tradgedy to change the way we do business.

There have been enough issues world wide to make a huge change is how LEO's deal with everything. I have seen a Huge change from when I started nearly 20 years ago. Columbine, Beslan, 9-11 and Mumbai changed things in a major way. LE here is far more adaptive than ever before. The problem here is, we are being stretched thin. I am now a jack of all trades. Fortunately I had a tactical background before we changed our tactics so it wasn't as big of a culture shock.

The hardest thing is to prevent these tragedies.

Realistically the best prevention is a concerned friend, family member or neighbor intervening or letting someone know, someone has gone completely off their rocker.

True but there are so many loners who have nobody caring. Big cities with massive buildings - how many people do really know their neighbours?
