they are the ticket for anyone who has trouble sharpening or wants to get their knives sharp in a few minutes so they can spend more time making them dull again. i have been sharpening knives since i was 13 and i'll be 51 in 3 months and for the past 20 i have been using paper wheels to sharpen knives on. you can also do scissors and shears on them.

the wheels consist of 2 wheels made from a special paper and they go on a motor. one has grit applied over white glue and you work up a burr with this wheel. the other wheel is used to remove the burr and strop the edge. you apply a white medium grit rouge to it. with this wheel you can maintain an edge just as if you were using a strop but in a few seconds instead of minutes.

all you need is a 1/2 hp motor that runs 1725 rpm or a variable speed buffer set to low speed. the manufacturer suggests 3450 rpm but i think the wheels work much better at the lower speed which is also safer should you do something you are not supposed to.

here is a good setup http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthread...page=0&vc=1

anyone who is interested in learning more about the wheels can pm me with their number and i'll be glad to give you a call. i can call free only to the 50 states or canada.

What's the best way to apply the sharpening rouge to the wheels?

Ted, The CD I got with my kit said; Turn on the wheel and lightly press the rouge up against the wheel.

I got suckered in to buying a grinding wheel 1/2 h.p. it had a paper wheel and a "sharpening abrasive" wheel to reset the edge.

I had no training in this fine art other than watching the CD that came with it. I butchered three knives before I put it in the closet.

I do worlds better with The Sharpmaker. CPM-M4,CPM-S35VN,M390,CPM-S30-V,154CM,...you get the point.

Every steel I own I can handle with the rods. Hi-speed wheels just aren't for me.

Peace.

with proper instructions the wheels are easy to use. that is why i offer help to anyone who is not sure how to use them. i talked to a guy who was blind in 1 eye and had him sharpening with the wheels in about 15 minutes.

you can sharpen any steel with the wheels also.

to apply the white rouge i just rub some on the slotted wheel until i see the wheel coated some with it.

Richard, where can one procure these marvelous magical wheels at a reasonable price (and what should one figure on a reasonable price?)? Thanks!

you can pick up a set at any woodcraft store or order them through grizzly imports. there are cheaper wheels out there but i found out the hard way that cheap wheels are just that. the first "good" set i bought are still going strong and the cheap ones ($10. less) i bought after them are already wore out. the cheap ones seem to be made from recycled paper and mine came apart over time. you can also get the good ones from the manufacturer at sharpeningwheels.com

i think grizzly has the cheapest price but i would check out the woodcraft store price and see how much it is to just pick them up and save on shipping.

prince of peace, you should get your wheels out again and let me talk you through using them. if i can teach a guy who is blind in 1 eye how to use them within 15 minutes then you should be able to use them after talking to me. .

if you put the wheels on a variable speed motor you can slow them down to around 1000 rpm with the grit wheel and the slotted wheel up to at least 1700 rpm and get your knives freaky sharp. even the slotted wheel can make a big difference in an already decent edge.

i was just reading the paper wheel thread i started over on bf. there was a new member that made his first post in the thread saying how impressed he was with the wheels.

if you can get a variable speed buffer i would go with that option. pm me your number and i'll talk you through sharpening your first knife.
