Even my hatchet has a mirror edge and can shave!

I need to make or get a strop!

question; (forgive my ignorance) why would you need a axe or hatchet to be shave sharp? doesn't that risk the chance of foldover and reduce the life of the tool?

Depends on how obtuse the edge is. It is extremely sharp, however the angle itself it steep. Lots of steel behind the edge. I find it handy for precision chopping and splitting as the edge bites in quite easily.

I think you live in a place that you need an axe and hatchet more than I, so you would know and have first hand experience..

My truck has a permanent bow saw and full size axe hidden in it. Both get regular use.

When you are 10 miles down a very small trail with no place to turn around, dead fall needs to be dealt with!
