I wonder if the Busse-Kin will ever use D2 steel again. Here is an old thread that some may not have seen showing just what magic the Busse-Kin group can work on D2.....

Yea, I don't have any Busse D2 I'd love to see how that compares to my other Busse kin steels.

Maybe a small run special edition or something.

Edit... I take that back... I do have a Swap Rat Vex, it's D2.

I still wouldn't mind another though.

Pit, what advantages does D2 offer over say a typical Yard/Rat steel of SR101??

I know charles may uses it alot, but I don't know what technically sets it apart.

got my sister a vex with buy brown sheath and elclintor lanyard. she just knows it's a knife. has no idea what she what sweet blade she has.

vex wasn't quite for me but as I look for and edc blade from the busse kin group it sits pretty high on the list as and option.

dont know but 6" of thin D2 slicer sounds like a good place to put a war dog handle. maybe call it the WarD2!

I know charles may uses it alot, but I don't know what technically sets it apart.

Definitely better corrosion resistance...almost as good as a stainless !

Great edge holding, maybe a touch better than SR101 !!!

So it gives up a bit of toughness then. Any idea how much?

You know what the knife industry needs...some ratio that measures toughness to hardness so that there is a comparitive metric which can be used to see where steels fall on a sliding scale. Something akin to Young's Modulus. It's interesting that none of the manufacturer's ever use Young's Modulus to compare their blades...it's a different measurement, but I'm certain it could be related back to edge holding capability and toughness.

I'm no expert, but D2 is a pretty good in between as a "Tool Steel", when it comes to Carbon verses Stainless. But it does appear to be a little more brittle that Carbon, and not as rust resistant as Stainless. I have a D2 folder and I do have to watch it for oxidation, and I'm a bit paranoid as to it's lateral strength. INFI is certainly a step up from D2 and from my understanding is also classified as a Tool Steel as well, that's probably why you don't see much use by Busse kin these days. INFI has better lateral strength and better rust resistance too, in my experience anyway.

I love my Vex, it slices like a dream. Jerry has stated before that their D2 is better suited for thin slicers than INFI. I can't find the thread, though .

D2 has 14.00% Chromium iirc. Making it 1% from "stainless" steel, and also providing good wear resistance. The CPMD2 I have used has held an edge well. And the times it has come into contact with other metal I couldn't see any edge deformation whatsoever. I have heard its prone to chipping ect but then I have heard that alot with S30V and never experienced it myself.
