The NMFSHLE came with black paper if I'm not mistaken. This is correct. Black Paper gets a bad wrap from most folks for being too slick but I haven't experienced this problem personally. I've had a Magnum Bear Cub in my possession which had black paper micarta, I thought it was a great hanlde material choice for that model. Some say it shouldn't be used for larger knives, but I've never had one personally.

Arctic white has been my least favorite coating for a while now, but to each his own.
I think the issues with black paper may be rooted in the texturing of the handle. Some models may not be as good as others for black paper.
Case in point, I've heard of some with black paper TGLB's that like them alot. TGLB has a pretty aggressive texturing to the handle which probably makes up for the smoothness of black paper.
There is no denying that black paper is smoother than canvas micarta or possibly even g-10.

I definitely wouldn't want an Arctic blade on a user. I am sure over time I will own or handle them all at one point or another.
