Hey guys, I was cleaning out my closet the other day and found my Bug Out Bag in a state of semi-disarray...I need to tighten that bad boy up. I sure would like to hear y'alls perspectives on putting one together. I think I need the main one in the house and a mini kit for the car. What's in your B.O.B.? I know there was a nice thread on this a while back...

DANG! Sorry to hear that about the Jack Hammer. You know that's not really all that much of a bushcraft blade, you need something useful like a SOD or a WarDog. Did you buy that MUK sheath like that or did you do it yourself. It really looks nice with all those holes in it.

rainwalker was kind enough to humor my request for drain holes and drilled those in the sheath. figured the muk would be getting bloody and/or covered in food. wanted to be able to clean the sheath out as eat ad possible. with holes on both sides it actually works great.

but thanks for posting the BOB links! my BOB was delayed by my fishing gear purchases but will be looking at those threads fir guidance.

I thought those links would be good here. Folks won't have to go looking all over the place and there is a LOT of info in those three threads.

I need to start messing with my sheaths and BOB pack again.

I made this thread a sticky as there are always questions about BOB's and GHB's. If any of you come across any other threads I missed send me a PM and I will add them to the post I made with the other three.

I went back in the Outdoors and Fieldcraft section all the way to Dec of 2010 and this it the threads that I thought would apply. Your opinion may vary.

DDD,

I'm the author of most of the linked threads, but don't spend nearly as much time here as I use to. However, if you have specific questions feel free to send me a PM.

Internet service is not available at my home, but I'll periodically check for messages (as my access permits).

Maybe i am odd but my BOB setup is in my big black box of doom in the back of my jeep, plan is to hop in my jeep and G.O.O.D. and if i end up having to leave off on foot i open the box of doom, grab my pack, rifle, handgun, and knife from the box and start hoofing it

awesome, looking to find a side folding east german stock for my AK so it will fit in the box nicely, and going to bolt the box to the floor of the jeep so it cannot be easily removed

Hey guys, I´m wondering: Is there a FEMA advice on BOBs? In Germany there is such a thing. No one cares about it and just about 4% have ever heard of it but it stands since the cold war ended with regular updates...

FEMA and many other emergency managers have guidelines for a 72 hour kit here in the US.

Overall I'm not sure how many people really have them. I am guessing its higher where I live with the constant natural disasters the past few years.

Heads up.

Its national preparedness month. A great time to take a look at your BOB and replace items and/or switch up anything that needs fix'in.

I just went through my wife's car kit and it was in pretty rough shape. Way too much stuff and outdated inedible food. I bet I shave off 1/4 the weight of the bag.

With this thread and the emergency kit thread, I think we have all we need to build up our own personalized for our area and lifestyle disaster/bug out method. Now all I gotta do is start to work.

Oh and I found my TT 3 day assault pack! So when I'm done (if ever) I will have the following bags available for use.

TT 3 Day Assault 33 liter or 2016 cu. in.
Maxped Condor II 23 liter or 1400 cu. in.
Pigmy Falcon II 18 liter or 1098 cu. in.
Maxped Malaga 11.47 liter or 700 cu. in.
5.11 push pack 4.45 liter or 272 cu. in.
Maxped jumbo 4.45 liter or 272 cu. in.
Maxped Fatboy 2.55 liter or 156 cu. in.

Maxped Proteus 5.75 liter or 351 cu. in.
(Fanny pack that looks like a mechanics bag). I have it set up as a grab and go Rechargeable Weather Bag. Weather radio that has rechargeable battery and will also recharge by wind up crank handle or solar. I also have charging plug/cable, extension cord, 4 inch sheath knife, mylar blanket, gloves, flash light, area light, fire kit, water filter straw and a few other things. When we leave the house due to weather Warnings this bag goes with us.

I hear you. In all probability it will go like this.

Fat boy ALWAYS goes. It is my edc Man Bag, and It's like Karl Malden said "Don't Leave Home Without it"

TT Bag, loaded for a real Bug Out
Falcon II transferred from vehicle to vehicle depending on what we are driving that day
Condor II same as the Falcon II IF we think we need a little larger bag.
Jumbo Bug out lite bag, real light for 2 people
5.11 push pack, same as the Jumbo
Proteus, already explained, Weather Emergency Grab and Go

I am wanting to "Build up" at least two first aid kits. I already have the one Military kit so I might duplicate it as close as I can for a second kit. I WOULD like to have a more extensive kit IF I can ever find anywhere close where they teach you how to use a more extensive kit.

Well my Kelty Map3500 came in and it's a nice bag. With that and the TT 3 Day Assault I should be able to build up a couple pretty good bags for Patty and Myself.
I am thinking 1 pair of jeans in each bag (his and hers).
2 or possibly 3 sets of socks and under ware
MAYBE a pair of light sneaks for each one of us (spare)
2 or possibly 3 shirts of some kind depending on the season
Rain gear (USGI Poncho)
All Weather Emergency Blanket
A"Cooling Towel" (Patty does not sweat so this is quite important for her)
Head wear and Shemagh along with a pair of gloves for each of us
2 water bottles per pack (I may carry my pathfinder canteen and cup with "Stove" setup)
IFAK for each bag (Maybe). At least a second kit for Boo boos
S5 in Combat master sheath (each sheath has a DT Special fire kit in the auxiliary pouch)
411 in combat master sheath
I an still thinking the 9mm Beretta pistol and Carbine for me and Ruger 10-22 for Patty
Mt. House freeze dried meals possibly in another (Pouch, could be strapped anywhere or carried over the shoulder)

Now mind you, this is just a Shanks Mare carry. If in a vehicle a lot more stuff will be taken, including shotgun, AR and another handgun at least along with a lot more food, clothing, "Comfort" items of some sort.

I will have to add and subtract things as I build them up, depending on how much it weighs when I am satisfied.
Even though I have a "List" this won't be completed over night. I am sure as I said I will think of things I need to add and others I need to remove. It's gonna take a while, but at least I've got a start and some good lists to look at and go by.

Would it be safe to store some items at your bug-out location?

No not really. There are other folks that go there at times, although rarely. Wouldn't want to take a chance even though we could put some stuff in a locked bolted down box.

Doesn't seem like a very secure bug-out location; you might look for another one or two a bit more secure. Always a good idea to have a "plan B". wink

VERY few folks ever go there. And when they do it's just a couple neighbors to go fishing and this has happened only maybe three times in the last year and a half.

If you can't completely trust your neighbors when times are good, how do you think they will act when times are bad, such as when needing to go to a bug-out location? I still suggest you develop a "plan B". wink

Just to be sure, in case I didn't explain it, they were given permission to come fish in the lake.

Who owns the lake and surrounding property?

I have owned our place here for 28 years, yet I am surprised at how many folks know about my pond and the good fishing. ;(

Largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. That is the recommended stocking for ponds in Missouri according to the Conservation Department. Many years ago, a previous owner used to raise catfish, clean them, and then take them to Kansas City to sell.

Thanks, Tom. I remember, quite fondly, the catfish dinners that my Grandparents church in Alabama used to put on in the summer.

The first time my son came up from Alabama he wanted to have a dinner of fresh caught fish. He happily cleaned them and we all ate well! LOL smile

At one time I used to work for a Japanese company.and also fished almost every day during the season. My Japanese friends were horrified when I told them that I threw back all the bluegills and yellow perch because I thought they had too many bones. They said they would take all I could give them because the fish was much fresher than what they could buy in the store. I didn’t have to clean them either. They also paid me with beer, sake and Suntory whisky.

Sounds like you had a good deal going Ray. I don't think I could work at a Japanese restaurant. I'd wipe out the buffet!

I couldn’t find any sushi restaurants in my area that I liked so I had to learn how to make my own. Good, made in Japan, knives are not cheap either. Only Randy could afford a set. I have only 2 knives that are made in Japan. The set of 4 was made in China.

I ALMOST bought a set of Japanese knives when I was stationed there, but didn't. Probably a good thing as the set I was looking at was in the UPPER three figure range, and that was almost 30 years ago.

Perhaps you should have bought them. If they were hand forged, that’s about what one High end knife costs today.

Good for all sorts of stuff. TP, paper towels or wash cloths. UN-sterilized gauze… Well, you get the picture. I have a box and I also carry a small tube of them in my Man bag all the time. They work fairly well for a lot of stuff and for many different uses as a hygiene product of some kind. Personally I think they are worth the money.

They have that small sized tablets in a lot of our dollar stores.
I used them for a few years, but I found them too small for a lot of things.

The past 2 hunting seasons I used a similar tablet, but it is about the diameter of a silver dollar and 1/2 inch thick.
You still simply add a few drops of water to them, but they are bigger and stronger.

Both sizes are available on amazon

Back in the 1990's there was a group of 7 or 8 of us that use to bow fish carp in a couple of different dykes.
They are an invasive species that out competed native fish.
Every Thursday during bow fishing season you would find anywhere from 2 to 7 or 8 of us bow fishing this dyke.
We would get there after work a fish until dark.

1 day we noticed a couple of Chinese gentlemen using rod and reel to fish for carp, they were there before we arrived.
As they were packing up to leave we asked them how did they do.
They got nothing, between the 3 of us we got 5 carp, when we asked them if they wanted them they were happy and tried to pay us (we refused)
Next week same thing.
After that they would just show up around the time we were leaving and pick up the catch.
If they were late they knew where we would leave them at.

None of us were drinkers, so they would give us different Chinese deserts and candies as thank you.
They hated the end of bow fishing season

Oh man the battles with fisheries those guys have going on is insane. They all tip each other off and get outta there 10 minutes before they arrive every time. We've also seen them dumping sacks of frogs in certain lakes in your hood as they try to spread the invasive pop for ease of harvest. The stories fish/game guys have shared is insane

Made no sense that the government banned bow fishing for invasive species
