I live in a great place if you are interested in native culture's. Natives actually outnumber whites in my hometown. There are 70+ indian reserves in the area and Prince Albert(where I live) was a major centre in the fur trade and a native settlement before that. It is also the scene of the northwest rebellion
when the French Catholic metis rebeled against the english redcoats. You can still find lots of evidence of battles and the fur trade.
If you are interested in the fur trade era and US history definitly check out the book "White Devil" by Stephen Brumwell. It reads like an exciting novel but is historically accurate. It is about a US/British force using native tactics in the French indian war. One thing I noticed is the tactics the indians used in the 1700's were exactly the same as the Finns used against the Soviets to great effect in the Winter war of 1939. The equipment Rogers Rangers were supposed to have with them at all times was 1 good knife , a hawk and a rifle with 60 rounds of ammo.
Sounds like it would still be a good idea for an equipment list.
