A couple things...
1) As a Californian now living in the Northwest, I'd like to point out that you're only allowed to move here if you promise not to tell anyone how great it is.
2) I highly recommend 'Colapse' by Jared Diamond (author of 'Guns, Germs, and Steel') for a mostly-objective discussion of societal impacts (both good and bad) on the environment.
