This is one of those rare times Knifeguy and I disagree! S6 forever!
If I only could have one knife it would be my S6, if I had two DF and SS4 so I nearly agree!
What I TOTALLY agree with Knifeguy over is sr77 for the Scrap-weiller and (154cm or) INFI for the SS3.5...
We might slightly disagree here.... and there is nothing wrong with some occassional differences in opinion. - Everybody will have subtle differences in opinion on some things, different ways of using knife, different hands and just style preferences.
But, we probably agree more than you might think. I am just not real big on a "one" knife option with one knife trying to do everything for me. I prefer a 2 knife combo and feel the SS4 and DFLE are (IMO) the two best over-all "designed" options (hard to recommend changes) from Scrap Yard (we might disagree on this part). And I could suggest some changes I might prefer on the S6 - although, fairly minor.
When I try to use a "one knife" only concept, I tend to feel the S6 and similar sized 6" - 7" blades just don't handle the smaller chores nearly as well as a good 3.5" - 4.5" blade. And since small "task" type chores are about 90% of how I use my knives in the field, smaller knives are MUCH more important to me. So, I always lean towards having a 3.5" - 4.5" blade as a Primary use knife.
As I posted on Pit's thread, if I "HAD" to have ONLY 1 knife, I would prefer the RMD. It handles smaller chores better than the S6 and although not good at chopping, I don't consider the S6 good for chopping either and they both baton pretty close. Also, the RMD is a little handier in size for carry. The RMD has a better sized guard and choil and an EXCELLENT handle design. I like Res-C for Choppers and I like Mudder Grips, but on most small to mid-sized knives I lean towards micarta (* IF a good handle design!).
If you haven't handled the RMD, you are in for a surprise and a treat. The handle is amazing. It might look a lot like a DM, but it feels and handles quite different. I have to say I prefer the RMD over the DM. I don't have the DMLE, but I am confident I would prefer the RMD still.
The S6 is a great knife, but I also have my SJTAC that I have highly modified the handle on. I like the blade on the SJTAC more than the S6. And after my handle mods, I like the handle on my SJTAC better (although, not quite finished with all intended modifications yet. ). I still don't like the Talon Hole on my SJTAC, but the guard/ricasso on the S6 is too large as well - so a wash when comparing the two.
I like INFI more, but I realize that a $250 - $300 Busse is not a fair comparison to a WAY better value on the S6. If the blade on the S6 were more like the SJTAC's blade - thinner and shape and with a few of my guard/ricasso tweaks, I am sure I would like a Scrap Yard S6.
However, after having started modifying my SJTAC, it is now mine for good. So, price isn't as much concern after committing to keeping it.
- I will photo chop my version of a Scrap Jack someday soon. But, I can tell you my version of a modified Scrap Yard S6 blade would look a lot like my Rat Jack Concept, but with Res-C.
My Rat Jack Concept:
If done right and with my preferences on tweaks, I could easily see myself replacing my current two favorite Scrappers with a new one.
*** Although, the Scrap-Weiler would still be a STRONG contender!
I WILL however, choose the S6 over the M6 any day, any time and EVERY time! I hated the WAY overly heavy feel of the handle and balance of the M6. - I had to sell it.
