i like the prahna shorts and the mountain hardwear pants for the same reason, they're both really liteweight and tough. the pockets on the shorts are deep, and they don't have a belt loop... they're held up by elastic. because i always carry a camelbak when hiking, i just throw almost everything in there and just keep a bandanna and pocket knife in my shorts. the pants are great, but they won't keep you warm. they're made for hiking and even after several hundreds of miles of hiking i've yet to see any wear on them at all. when it gets chilly out and i'm just hanging around at camp, i have a capilene base layer and/or microfleece pants to put on under the mtn. hardwear pants.
as far as my pearl zumi boulder t goes, i've used them for years both mountain biking and hiking and they wick sweat away and dry extremely fast, so are perfect, in my book, for biking and hiking.
the r1 patagonia fleece/jacket is the first fleece i've had that is truly wind proof. i have stood on the front of boat with the wind whipping and it doesn't get through the jacket. it doesn't stuff too well, but that's secondary to my needs in a fleece.
i like smart wool mid weight hikers for socks because they can be worn multiple days in a row without any noticeable difference (except stink) and the wool keeps you feet warm even when they're soaking wet.
