The two large knives I have used the most are made from Stainless Steel and I have never had any problems. My Frank Vought Outfitter is made from ATS 34 with .25 inch stock and at 8 inches long has been used to chop just about anything in wood.....I don't do Breeze blocks for fun or hammer the knife through metal bars I admit...but who on earth would? I used this in Borneo on some pretty hard wood and in Africa....so long as you keep the edge at 40 degrees and not finer there is no roll and it lasts a very long time. The heat treatment I think is the key to getting the best performance.

Prior to using this knife I used a Blackjack Maurader....this is in 440C Stainless and again had a good heat treated blade which could take a hell of an edge and came with an edge which was superb. My knife had a single edge and no back bevel. I gave it to a friends son who went for P Company selection and have no digital photo's of it....I think this was pre digital times anyway...but here is a nice photo of the double edged version.

The guy whose knife this is gave his a good bit of use with no worries in military service ....the single edged version was also the preferred blade of Maj John Plaster USAR who served as a sniper in the US Army Special Forces/MACV-SOG and later as an internationally respected instructor.
Good heat treated Stainless Steel can make a great cohopper.
If Dan would do a single edge blade of similar Bolo design either in 154CM or SR77 I would'nt have any qualms at all about buying either.
