I am surprised to hear you find the edge does not hold up well Adam?
I just got my HCLE nice and sharp so I have not had much time to test it but the steel is very hard and was a bear to sharpen which usually means it will hold a good edge.

I love the G10 handles on the HCLE I just wish they made a 4 inch HCLE to match.
They are a bit heavy though. It makes a better small belt or hunting knife than a EDC if you are weight concious.
