Up here, wind broke a lot of trees and did some damage. I was without power for 5 days, my Mom for 6. We also had water the entire time, and we both have gas water heaters, so we could even take hot showers. Although we didn't get any rain, a cold front kept temperatures in the comfortable range -- not too much cooler than yours, but with almost no humidity, so it felt a lot better. Some local communities lost power to pumping stations, so they lost water. Power has been restored to most customers. My frige and freezer were stuffed, but a lot of stuff in the freezer had been there long enough to be freezer burned anyway, so it needed a cleaning.

All in all, it could have been much worse. I'm wondering about getting a generator. Sams Club had a few Honda 13 HP / 7000 watt generators for just under a grand. They also had some 5000 watt models for nearly half that price, but the 7000 had a 240v outlet. I'm one of those people with a full garage, so from both a storage standpoint as well as a spending that much on something I might not use once every 3 or 4 years seems silly, but I'm still thinking about it. I've been fortunate that my power losses have occurred during reasonably mild weather, but that might not always be the case.
