I think your work looks amazing for a first knife. Using 440A makes good sense for that type of knife anyway, regardless of the lower price of the steel. That is a hard use survival type knife and needs toughness over edge holding anyway.
Great job. I guarantee that it will cut better than the TOPS model, which requires a whole lot of regrinding to make useful.
