Welcome Vivi!

The Mud Puppy and its brother the Bird Dog are both of 154CM which is like your Spyderco is considered Stainless Steel. So the rust should never be a issue with any reasonable care at all given to the blade.
When done using mine I wash in dishwashing detergent and dry right away and have never seen a dot of rust even on the rest of the Scrap Yard line which is made of SR-77 steel...save the INFI SS-4.

The fat edge is juts the way they came. It is not intended for chopping trees or removing brush from fence lines so re-grinding your own edge is wonderful. Mine see duty as cutters and food prep uses. Boxes, carpet snags, bugs trapped in the carpet by baseboards, sandwiches, apples, cheese you get it right?

Mine also have been re-ground to give a delicate surgical cut when used.
The other Scrap Yard knives I keep with a razor edge but thicker because their use is much more heavy duty.

What it boils down to is what ever your knife sees as continuous duty is where you should set the edge. Enjoy the new Scrap Yard knife and feel free to post some pictures of yours in use!

We all love knife porn!

Peace.
