This may be a Stupid Rookie question, but here goes:

What are knife lanyards actually for? I can see the sense on big knives of having a strap to keep the blade from slinging off for parts unknown if you lose your grip, or on small knives so you have some way to clip it onto your pack or harness, but none of these do either of those things...
