Yep, that's why I use a mouse pad and sandpaper, and rarely go coarser than 300 grit. Takes a little more elbow grease, but I am never worried I'm accidentally going to take way too much steel away.

It takes a certain level of artistic skill to do a nice job with a belt sander, and I'm not confident that my hands are that steady. My hat is off to those who do great work with those belt sanders!
