There's actually all kinds of space down at the bottom of the sheath if you are always sure of putting the blade in the same way. The sweep of the point gives you a whole corner of the liner to play with. For those modifying their sheaths I think it's probably best to keep it removable, for cleaning. If you get a lot of sand or pitch or gore in there it could get pretty bad.
