The outside of the body was solid but it had what we called at the time "Michigan Air Conditioning" The floorboards had holes in it so that when driving down the road after a snow you would get slush all over your legs and the heater was marginal at best.
Your describing my current truck! A 79 Chev 2wd. The outside isn't to bad but it has AC now. The kids complain about getting splashed here and there. It's got a 350 Rocket in it that still has TONS of power.
