Yes. Unfortunately, most employers put a lot of stock in it. For many professions it an absolute necessity. There may be some brilliant people out there who studied law, but you wouldn't hire a lawyer who never graduated from law school, even it he could ace the bar exam.

I think if you can pass the bar you should be able to be a lawyer. Maybe reguire one semester or something.

Now, as far as MDs go...I want them to go to school and practice on dead people before they cut on me.
