Around here it is a country thing. However all West Texas men will have dipped at some point in their lives. It isn't uncommon to have either a bank president or construction work with a pinch between their cheek and gum. Robert Earl Keen has a good song about Copenhagen.
Copenhagen and Skoal are both owned by US Smokelss tabacco I believe, which is the worlds largest seller of moist tobacco products. They are a big rodeo sponsor around here. But we are a big rodeo area so I guess that is fitting.
If you google "skoal ring" you will see what the cans do to your jeans pocket. Guys who dip wear it like a badge of pride.
