I also posted this at Rat Chat. Sorry for the double post for those that saw it. I wanted to post it here too for those that don't read Rat Chat.

Here’s my newest cardboard / duct tape sheath I made. This was a new design for a different knife, so I had to start from scratch. I believe it should also fit the Scrapper 6, since the blade size/shape is the same. I haven’t tried it yet with a Scrapper because I don’t have one yet. I also came up with a name for my sheathmaking “company”. I think it rolls off the tongue nicely.

It took me 4 hours to make. It is over an inch thick and is made of 6 layers of corrugated cardboard. The section that has the belt loop is covered with 3 layers of tape, the section that holds the knife is 3 layers, and both sections are held together with 3 layers of tape. The top layer is camo for looks, and the underlying layers are 3M tape for strength.

I tried something different this time. I got some of that Elmer’s super strong glue (it’s supposed to be similar to Gorilla glue but stronger) thinking that I would use it on the inside welt section to waterproof it. Well, that didn’t work to well. I read the label and found that you needed to wet the surface for the glue to activate or whatever. When I put the glue on, after a few minutes it kept bubbling and expanding. It was making a drippy mess everywhere. I kept wiping it down with a paper towel. I let it dry 24 hours and looked at it. It made the cardboard hard as a rock, but the glue didn’t flow into all the crevices like I’d hoped. A thicker glue might work. Though due to the tight tolerances I make these, maybe glue isn’t a good idea.

I decided to go ahead and try taping over the welt section to waterproof it. This looked ok, but I later found that due to the tight fit, the blade split the tape inside. So for the future I think I’ll just leave it plain and just not get water inside it. I usually stay inside if it’s raining anyway.

Also pictured is my Battle Rat / Rat Mastiff sheath that I made 6-9 months ago. As you can see, it’s holding up quite well after many months of use. It gets used a lot, as you can tell from the wear on my knives, all of which have been owned less than a year. These sheaths are quite tough, more so then you might think.

I also noticed that they changed the color slightly of the camo tape. You can tell with both sheaths side by side. The original tape was more greyish, and the newer roll is more greenish.

Later sometime I’ll make another one and put it on eBay again. When I learn to sew leather, I’d like to replicate this design in leather the same thickness as the cardboard. Maybe someday when I’m a “famous” sheathmaker, these will be collectors items.

Well, I hope you like it.
