NOW, when I DO use a lanyard, I lay the loop over the top of the handle and grip the handle as usual so one side of the lanyard is over my fingers and I place my thumb OVER the top of the lanyard so it is between my thumb and the handle, AND I push it forward toward the blade. It seems to help me a bit but if it does slip (fly out of my hand) it should just slide off my hand. Now if I am just doing normal cutting with a knife and I am over water or a drop off I will loop it around my wrist, but I am not chopping so there isn't any danger there.
