I think that Greaser AND Gary are both ready to "Fend for themselves", and to help others to become somewhat or more self reliant. I hope that none of this ever happens, at least in our lifetimes. But the odds are stacked (and rising) against us.

Got some advice about how to set up a "Day Hike" small pack from a Dog that is a Plethora of information. I like using big words I have to look up. Makes Y'all think I'm not a Redneck. grin

Like your comment about them taking our crops and us living in a cacoon...

First, at least we experienced true freedom leading up to "it".
Second, we would have learned enough by then to just start over . Try that if "they" take your pile of can goods.

Third, and this is the important distinction ... note the optimistism in my second point above. Optimism is the big difference between "preppers" and "free homesteaders". Homesteaders just see difficulty and adversity as a daily chore to be conquered. I'm suggesting that sitting around and waiting for something to happen is not a good plan. Adopt a can-do attitude and start living like it already did.

I fall into the pessimistic attitude often I try not to but it is hard when I see what I have spent my life fighting for being given away by people who have no idea the price it came at.

I still try and go out and enjoy life as much as I can, I am not sitting at home running air raid drills all day LOL (saw it on that prepper show) luckily what I enjoy is the outdoors mechanics and guns so it leads me to survival type activities anyways.

We do have a couple acre garden half of that being corn but I also like to have a stockpile of food just in case something happens to this years harvest.

I agree with the optimism thing and I am working on it.( I feel this is the hardest part.)

We grew past were I perceive many here are, and found how amazing it is. It's a hard life, but unbelievably rewarding and fulfilling. I broke the mold and want others to see the other side thru my eyes.

I understand I just didn't want anyone thinking I am going to be stealing someones only means of survival. Sorry I got a little heated I have worked and lived in professions and places where it is a necessary evil to react hard and fast. Like I have said in the past I appreciate your post (hell pretty much everyone's posts on here except for maybe Skunk he is just a post hog. LOL just kidding) so no hard feelings on my end. I feel like I took the pill and it woke me up but I am still stuck here sometimes.

I a lot of times actually do hesitate to post during some discussions. About all the "Real world experience) I get these days is in the kitchen and when I have to clear the roadway at Mingo, or do some "Yard work" around the house, unlike you guys that get to go play out there. So I try and base my posts (some of them) on my experience running around in the woods as a kid.

I differ in that I see using the grid as dependence on it.

Here is an example of why...

Our home's AC died last July. We allowed ourselves to suffer thru the hot and humid months of August and September. It averaged 86F at 10 pm in our bedroom. We just had the AC repaired this week. Why? Because we couldn't function last summer. We had food spoiling, etc.

Why is this relevant?

1) I didn't have central heat or air until I was 10 years old. Before I had it I didn't know that you could sleep without waking up in a pool of sweat.

2) We learned new methods of cooling the house, keeping food safe, and different sanitation needs from our experience.

3) My wife is LIVID about wanting to use the Air now. She is just plain mad that she is controlled by this "creature comfort".

The moral of the story is...
Grid Use = Grid Dependency

You said you had a primitive youth without running water. Turn off the water to your house for seven days and write back.

I can understand that but you also have the knowledge to get by without when and if it comes to that, I see that as using the grid. I would guess 85 to 90 percent (lower on this board) of the people out there have no idea how anything works or comes to be with out the grid that is what I see as dependent on the grid. Am I spoiled Heck yeah I am but I went back to primitive in 04-05 while I was in Afghanistan. I spent the majority of my deployment outside the wire as it were and found that I can still do pretty well without. Heck I went 90 days with out so much as a stream to rinse off in, baby wipes is all I will say on that one, we were in the mountains building a FOB and had to build the showers from scratch. (water catchment, diesel water heater(could easily be wood), gravity feed at first then with a generator (again could be solar or wood)) I could have built it quicker be when you only get one bird every two weeks until the pass isn't snowed in it takes a while to get the parts you need. LOL

We had MREs but no heaters for them so we literally heated them over and old school camp fire.(what I wouldn't have done for a nice venison steak) It was like a long term camping trip where you had rockets mortars coming at you on a daily basis. lol

I have set aside many things needed for off the grid living if it comes or I can just build a really nice off the grid cabin on the lake or something if we get lucky.

That's ok Skunk from some of your posts it seems like you have at least the basics down and living in that nice temperate area you do will make life a lot easier.
