I've carried all sorts of knives out in the bush and I think most semi-skilled people can make just about any of them to work

yeah I agree. I mean look at a lot of your jungle and bush dwellers. A LOT of them might well only have a Machete to use for everything, and they get along with them quite well. It's just like the one gun man. You can bet5he knows how to use it.

Oh don't get me wrong I like big blades and do love bowies
I keep a razor sharp 10" bowie in my bed when I sleep in a tent in grizzly country
I figure if he is coming in the front door, I am leaving by the new back door

Haha, Yup, a back door in a situation like that would be your best option for staying alive.

i often go out with a cold Steel norsehawk
Around the same weight as a big blade and very usefull
If worse comes to worse you can use it like an ulu

The best knife to have is one you are used to, that you know how to use, no matter WHAT profile/length it may be. OR as you stated, it may not even be a knife at all.

exactly
True some designs are better than others as are some manufacturers
A well designed and made knife can make things a lot easier

I'm not sure that our tastes in knives change that much, but rather we find out that certain knives are better suited for the purposes we MOSTLY use a knife for.

I think our taste change when we are learning what works and what is hype
Once we learn that then I agree with you
