Yeah a 40 is known for a sharper recoil. Guess it burns quicker therefore you get the recoil in a shorter period of time verses the 45. Now that's just a guess on my part, but I guess it could be.

Best way for my feeble mind to understand it is that a 40 goes BANG and a 45 Boom.

Once again, to me, it's strange how mere milliseconds can make that much difference.

I use Speer gold dots. Mostly because thats what we are mandated to carry. 40 cal 165 grains and 45 cal 230 grains. 223 64 grain.

They do the trick and IMHO are a good choice. I still have a bunch of the Goldn Sabre Ammo which is what we switched from. All are good choices.

I think I might get a 20 round box of the 185 grain ones just to see how they do. I've never shot a 185gr bullet through a 45. Lightest I've ever gone is the Cor-bon 200gr.

Heck I even saw some 78 grain 45acp loads! Specs said MAX range is 25 meters. Speed is 1900 from the muzzle but don't remember the energy.

Liberty civil defense ammo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jCRYR1ipRU

Product Information

Shop more Liberty Ammunition products
Liberty Civil Defense ammunition is a high velocity, extremely accurate load designed for self-defense. The 78 Grain Lead-Free Fragmenting Hollow Point bullet travels at 1900 feet per second, resulting in 12 inches of ballistic gel penetration and a permanent wound cavity greater than 5 inches in diameter. When tested through denim cloth into ballistic gel, this load penetrated almost 8 inches deep and produced a wound cavity 6 inches in diameter. This lightweight, high velocity round yields less felt recoil and has an effective range of 25 meters. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, and requires no weapons modifications.

Technical Information
Caliber: 45 ACP +P
Bullet Weight: 78 Grains
Bullet Style: Fragmenting Hollow Point Lead-Free
Case Type: Nickel Plated Brass

Ballistics Information:
Muzzle Velocity: 1900 fps
Muzzle Energy: 625 ft. lbs.

Just type in 78 grain 45acp ammo and look at all the results.

Looks like the same concept as the Glasers. They are pre fragmented defense ammo designed to basically explode on contact in order to reduce over penetration. The Glasers are compressed lead shot surrounded by a copper jacket and tipped with a polymer ball. Mag Safe is another brand of pre fragmented defensive ammo.

Randy. I went with 40 becasue 1. It's family standard 2. Thought 9mm was small wink

I want to get a 45 and a 9mm at some point but decided my rifle was more important.
