I think that one reason the 12 is so prevalent for HD over the 20 is that you can find a lot more loadings/specialty ammo for the 12. I've read that a lot of larger departments are going to the 20 for women and smaller statured men and not having any problems. When I first started hunting, I used a 20 but I switched to a 12 because of the ammo situation that you mentioned. I' ve read that the Air Force Security Specialists are transitioning from the 20 gauge to the .410 because the heavy recoil of the 20 was messing up their hair.

Our military also uses sissy 5.56 NATO and 9MM so I'm not going to gauge manliness by what they're using.
It's true there is plenty of reduced recoil 12 defense ammo available, but recoil is only part of the reason I switched to 20 gauge. I also did it for the weight reduction. I've never weighed it but I'm pretty sure this little 870 only weighs about 6 pounds. My 12 gauge was noticeably heavier. I'm also considering SBS-ing this thing. The only reason I haven't is the reduced ammo capacity going from 6 rounds in the tube to 4.
If I'm feeling EXTRA manly I could always press my semi-auto 3 1/2" 12 gauge into HD service, but that thing has a 28" barrel. Shoot, some folks around here run a 10 gauge!

And I'll be honest. If I thought .22lr snake shot was good enough for HD you can bet your sweet posterior I'd be running it!

Yep. It has been nothing more than reliable for me on low and high brass rounds.

I would have and 870 or Ithaca 37 in 20ga for a house gun in a heart beat..!!!
For a bit(till 1996) I had an ex-RVN "Asian Cut" M37 in 12ga. It was a beast to use as it was soooo feaking light !! Barely 18 inches of barrel that gauged as "Full" but it threw buckshot into tight little bunches...

Well I finally ordered the part and got it installed. Sorry, no before pics or work in progress pics. I had to special order some socket cap screws because the adapter made the screw that came with the stock 1/2" short. No hardware stores carried them so I had to order 12 to get 1. Now I have 11 spares. Overall I'm very happy with it. ![[Linked Image from i1091.photobucket.com]](http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i393/amflud/IMAG0430_zpswnyhtdxr.jpg)
