I am speaking in a historical context here and not bashing the Catholic Church
During the Spanish Inquisition and similar times
Torture or killing innocent people was seen as acceptable because the mortal life was insignificant in comparison to saving your soul
This belief in how important our soul is, helps explain why the worst of sinners can be saved

I know that at the heart of this belief is that the mortal life is much less important than the soul or afterlife
Yes. THAT is the core. A belief that our "Souls" are immortal and will spend SOMEWHERE (Heaven or Hell) for all time. It is not the get out of jail free card that some people try to portray it as From a religious perspective salvation is a miracle that must be available to all that claim it And if true than "false salvation" would never happen

I will admit that it is a difficult concept to grasp for a lot of folks. I wish this wasn't true. I say this NOT saying they are wrong, but saying that What If We're right. I have family that are religious and I feel bad that they genuinely fear for my soul It does not matter what religion you are If that person blesses or prays for me I feel honored

I think I understand why you feel bad, but you should feel proud that they care that much for you. Many times those that we care for most can and do hurt us the most without meaning to.
