I had originally thought about a .22 as well. Then as I thought longer about it I agree with Doc and Tom. TWO legged varmints are a lot more likely than needing to use a small caliber game getter.

Ruger... I've got a buddy with one. He makes it a point to pick up dud .22 and ammo that's been laying in the dirt for months and even years and firing it through that ruger.. So far, 1 malfunction IN TOTAL, and Ryan runs a LOT of .22. There was one that sticks out in my mind, completely corroded casing and the bullet was no longer seated straight in the casing, but more of a +/- 30`. We shoved it into the chamber, forced it straight, and whacked the back of the slide a few times to get it into battery. Bang, with full extraction.
Oh, and I don't believe he's ever cleaned it

Agreed that a suppressed. 22 would be nice to have along with the primary defensive pistol. The only inconvenience is that you would need to keep the suppressor on your person. You could not risk it being stolen from the truck or pack. I have a setup similar to Jarhead journalist and my spectre ll is either in the safe or my pocket if not in use.

If you will already have a reliable defensive firearm on your person, I say a 22 for critter hunting and ability to carry a few hundred rounds without weighing you down. Agreed

My GHB has a Ruger 10/22 Take Down with TechSights TSR200 sights and 550rds of ammo (stored in a 16oz Nalgene since rimfire is so moisture sensitive).
I always have a defensive handgun (9mm, 40SW, 45Acp, or 10mm) on my person.
The CCW takes care of staying "normal looking" but ready to defend. If things are really bad the rifle comes out. 550rds makes a strong defense too.

Well put. I have a bob at my folks house ( home base) it's a 1.5hr drive from my location. I keep a small get home kit at my apartment with me. Mostly food water clothes and my g19 spare mags and ammo and an 870 tactical. At my folks house a have a chest rig and my 3 gun belt which in shtf gets a few things added and taken off and turned in to a battle belt.

We'll select our firearms based upon the situation.
We chose to keep a 10/22TD in my pack because if we're forced to run out of our house with only enough time to grab one thing it'll be my pack containing a reliable and accurate rifle with 550rds of ammo as well as two knives, fire/shelter/food/water, etc.
I would NOT want to get in a firefight with a 22LR. However, I do like the ability to carry 550rds of ammo with me while only sacrificing a little weight.
My pack looks civilian (standard hiker's pack). This allows for a "grey man" approach.
In a real catastrophic situation where we're having to fight to survive and therefore don't care if we look militant...ideally I'd have time to couple my pack with my plate carrier and a real fighting rifle (FN Scar, LWRC Individual Carbine, Colt AR15, etc).
