I want to revive this thread. Personally if I had to choose knife or axe, I would choose the knife. They are so much more easy to wield and use than even a small axe. Of course the 1311 for my knife, and as Dan has pointed out you can even process a deer with it.

I'm glad you revived this thread. I would definitely rather have a large knife than an axe in a survival situation. I feel an axe is a more specialized tool.

A lot has to do, with the area that you live in.
And also your skill level, many of us grew up using knives and axes, years ago we took my son in law on his first primitive camping trip.
While he was trying to cut kindling, I was scared the hatchet was going to wind up in a body part. I took his 12 inch knife and showed him how to properly baton, much safer.

While I will use either depending on my mood, if forced to choose one it would be an axe

Interesting choice.

I live in British Columbia and the temperate rain forest that I live in, an axe is usually the better choice.
Often I will carry a small knife and a tomahawk while hiking.
The tomahawk isn't as efficient as a hatchet or axe, but I like the weight savings

If limited to one item only I would go with the big knife.;)

I am not saying this is for everybody, but for me an axe is better than a knife for all wood splitting chores and wear a 411 for everything else.

I believe in using the right tool for the right job, and chopping usually needs an axe. I specified a knife if ONLY limited o one item.
