Actually, there were two DogFathers in the picture, but they got cropped out! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

My 7 year old got his blue belt tongiht. He has a huge smile on his face after he got it. It was cool to see him so happy.

Right on - I can't wait til my kids are old enough to do that kind of stuff.

Tell him that I said "congrats!"

What is he studying?

He is studying an Okinawan style called Shorin-Ryu. He started sparring a few months ago and he has really come a long way. He got a bloody nose 2 weeks ago and that spooked him a bit, but he sparred the next week and stood his ground. Martial arts saved me as a teenager.

They do some grappling that's based on Jujitsu. It's some really cool stuff. I really like ground training, it's amazing what a little person can do with Jujitsu against a bigger guy.

Yeah although it's tough to tell when the master pronounces it. The names of the Kata's really get me. I then have to try to explain them to my son and that makes it even more difficult.

Thats some good stuff. I took TaeKwonDo growing up - its generally more sport oriented, but our club did a lot of self defense and grappling as well. I started when I was 5 and earned my black belt when I was 15, and then I quit when I was about 18. 5 years later I found myself in Korea (home of TKD) w/ the Army and was able to train w/ a well known Korean Grand Master - it was great! I'm by no means a fighter or an expert, but I think that martial arts played a large role in how I turned out.

The "Combatives" program that the Army teaches is mostly ground fighting oriented and is some pretty good stuff - if taught well (crappy instruction makes it worthless of course).
