Made a kydex sheath friday for the Dogfather. I had just rinsed out some of the gunk from sanding, slipped the DF in to check fit when I get a call from the Lady that her oil pressure light is beeping and there is a strange sound coming from the engine bay....24 hours later....Its looking like its about to rain so I head outback to clean up my work space and this is what I found:

No complaining here, just sharing. I was a bit surprised at the coverage and speed of corrosion so once i get it cleaned up I'll have to run a control test to see what it really takes. There was still a little bit of masking tape residue on the edge which may have held onto moisture and accelerated the process.

To be honest that's as I expected it to be given your story! Don't worry Dan's blades don't pit too much so it'll clean up well!

That's the only thing 1095 comes close to S7 OR sr77 on- none are in any way corrosion resistant.. Just 1095 is a bit worse!

Yeah, I've never left a blade this damp before. My M2 nimravus was left in a glass of saltwater for 8 hours with only a very small dark spot resulting. That was during a test to check its suitability as a dive knife. The difference of course being it was not exposed to air like the dogfather was.

Not sure if I want to sharpen out the rust or try to rub it out with a tough cloth. Seems a little extensive for the tough cloth though. Then again, I am going camping with it this evening so perhaps I should just see if some chopping helps to buff out the rust.

Thankyou, This forum really is a nice place to hang out.

On a related note, How the fark do the other kydex sheath makers get a firm grasp on the knife without abrading the res-c? I've got the mouth flared open at the moment but before I cut it down to where most of the pro sheaths are I wanted an opinion. Any chance that it will still grab well enough for inverted carry once its not grabbing the res-c? Or do the other kydex sheaths still have a small amount of friction between handle and sheath?

(didn't want to start a whole new topic for a silly question like that)

Yep, pm Leatherface or Rainwalker for kydex advice if they don't chime in!

Using your DF shiny again is the best way to go.. Oh and welcome to the yard the best forum going in my biased opinion!

Looking at the close up, that appears to be just surface rust. Without sounding too cliche, I'd recommend oiling the blade if you are going to store it in any sheath. Smokey Mountain Knife Works sells a handy little eraser that will clean that rust right up.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Welcome to the yard

When I was forming my leather sheaths I had a similar experience with my DF and DM. Alls better after a little use

JYD#14 Do you need one, of course you do it's a knife and you like knives.....

A great forum indeed!

I generally don't oil my knives for storage aside from a quick wipe with tough cloth. But my less used knives still get used on a weekly basis. Never had a problem with rust but this is also the first time I left a knife with a super high polished edge covered with masking tape goo in a wet sheath for a day, DUH!

Rubbing doesnt seem to be helping much and I'm not about to repolish the edge so some quality chopping time is next on the list. While it may just be surface rust, some if it is pretty darn thick.

Just checked the weather...Thunderstorms tonight. This wont stop me from going backpacking, but I might wake up to another rusted dogfather!

I soaked my S6 in salty warm water (so condensation on the blade) for about 3 or 4 hours once.. That came out a mess and cleaned up just fine. Your DF won't let you down, unlike the weather!
