How would you compare proprietary steel like Dan's SR77 to other "commercialized" steel such as CPM 3V, 154CM, CPM S30V, etc...

What is SR77 closest to in overall performance, and has anyone done any testing as far as SR77 against any of the popular mass produced steels?

P.S. Cant wait for the DF LE

Those are all good steels but SR 77 will out perform them all except in corrosion resistance.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

I figured or assumed that SR77 would be equal to or better than the above listed steels in performance/durability, I however wasn't to sure on the corrosion resistance of the "other" steels vs. SR77

Thanks for confirming that HD

When comparing wear resistance to toughness, what is the difference between the two categories. It seems that CPM 3V for example falls way short to S7 in toughness but exceeds S7 in wear resistance. The proprietary heat treatment etc.. that Dan gives S7 to create SR77, I'm sure may change the overall characteristics of S7 and allow it to exceed the other steels in every category?

No steel that I know of is tops in all categories. Maybe INFI. Wear resistance would relate to edge holding. I can tell you from my own personal testing and experience that SR77 has more than adequate edge holding and superior toughness.
To have a knife that stays sharp, is easily resharpened, and is as tough as jack hammer bit steel is good enough for me.

I find it hard to invest in any other cutlery product that is not apart of the Busse family, I have an opportunity to buy a knife off of a buddy, it is a Fehrman knife and he is only asking $150.00 for it. The steel used is CPM 3V, which I've heard is a good steel, but its not a Scrap Yard, Swamp Rat, or Busse Combat.

I have owned a variety of blades over the years, all ranging from AUS 8, 154CM, VG10, CMP S30V etc...and I have been using to the Busse family knives for a fairly short time, but have been very happy/impressed with their quality and performance.

I'm not sure what to think about the Fehrman name/CPM 3V, anyone have any experiences?

Still do not own any Busse Combat's yet, one day a FBM will be mine!!
But a Dog Father will definately hold me over <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
