Just when I thought I needed an FFBM, or something along those lines, the Dog Father smacks me down again and shows me whose boss.

Here is the deal. I got my hands on a Scrap Yard Dog Father some time back. This thing is a chopping beast. After splitting some wood and starting a little camp fire one night I decided to place some of my knives up against my portable back yard fire pit to take a quick pic. I have done this several times. So I place my AK, NO-E, and DF against it. I quickly snapped a pic and then removed the blades. This did not take long.

When I retrieved the DF I felt the handle and realized that part of it had melted. I quickly ran to some light to assess the damage. Yep. Meltdown! Before it cooled and hardened I tried to reshape it as best I could. Then it cooled and hardened just as before. Here is a horrible pic of the side.

The DF being a user this did not bother me. It was asthetics only and did not interfere with its performance one bit.

Tonight I thought I'd just clean it up a bit. So I used one of my metal files on it to. It cleaned up real nice.

I may smooth it out completely and make sure it is completely even on both sides but this is good for now. Hey, it's a user.

Anyway, if you jack your res-c up I have found that it is easy to work with and cleans up nicely. I hope someone can use this.

And then, after seeing some of you dogs strip your DFs, I decided to do the same.

Good job on the handle.

You could also Parkerize the blade for added rust protection.....if you like.

I parkerized the blade of my Dumpster Mutt and it's held up well against heavy chopping.

When you care enough to use only the best...stick'em with a SKYCO knife.

Looks great. I used a lighter and finger pressure to patch up a cut I got in my coots handle.

Those lines are under the coatings on most of the Busse family knives.

They are only on the "flat" sides of the knife. They are not on the grind areas.

I am pretty sure that Busse (Swamp and Scrapyard) all use the same (apparently) high tech equipment to heat treat and test for hardness.

However, I am sure the treatment process for the different steels (INFI, SR101 & SR77) all very a little.

I have two theories that are based on other information I have read ... or ... I just made up the information and I will claim I created the theory based on information I have read because I can't remember....

Theory 1:

Busse (and kin) have a machine that tests the whole length of the blade for proper hardness. The machine marks the blade in a zig-zag pattern as it is testing for hardness. Maybe the blade is fed through such a machine (??).

Maybe you have seen the hardness test mark on a Puma knife. Puma does a hardness test near the guard area of their knives. The test makes a little divot hole.

------

Theory 2:

The marks are from a machine that is part of the Transverse Wave Tempering process. I can't go into any more theory about this as it is top secret.

------

The marks a bugger to get out if you are removing the coatings from Busse, Swamp Rat or Scrapyard knives.

.

Wow, Knifeguy. Your theories are much better than mine. I just figured the workers got bored and doodled on the blades! My DF just has a "Z" on the tang where a tang stamp would go, but the Dumpster Mutt had deep scratches like DN's Dog Father. Took a lot of grinding to remove.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Interested in seeing pics and its own thread on this. How do you parkerize with the Res C handle still in place? Inquiring dogs wanno know. I would like to park one of my spare yard keepers maybe. thanks

But not heat resistant! I'll try to remember that next time I'm burning out back. My Dog Father is the "go to" knife for chopping branches to burn. At least you were able to repair it. What would Dan charge for a new handle? Inquiring Dogs want to know.
