In Colonial French territory, a very different tomahawk design, closer to the ancient Francisca, was in use by French settlers and Indigenous Peoples.

Tomahawk throwing is a popular sport among American historical re-enactment groups, and some martial arts enthusiasts are attempting to revive tomahawk fighting techniques used during the Colonial era.

Modern-day Tomahawks designed by the late Peter LaGana featuring synthetic hafts and a hatchet-like bit were used by US forces during the Vietnam war. This design is enjoying something of a renaissance with US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan as a tool and in use in hand-to-hand combat.[1][2]

LaGana's designs are currently manufactured by American Tomahawk Company. The original "Vietnam Tomahawk" is in use by the US Army Stryker Brigade in Afghanistan, the 172nd SBCT Team based at Fort Richardson, and the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division out of Fort Lewis.[2] The modern designation is VTAC and bears the National Stock Number of 4210-01-518-7244.[2]

The tomahawk is a "tool" in geometry consisting, in essence, of a semi-circle and two line segments. The basic shape is constructible with compass and straightedge. It is possible to trisect an angle with the tomahawk. This does not contradict the usual theorem stating that an arbitrary angle cannot be trisected by compass and straightedge, as translating the constructed tomahawk into the required position is not a Euclidean construction.

A gun is a common name given to an object that fires high-velocity projectiles. The projectile is fired through a hollow tube known as the gun's barrel. The projectile's caliber, or diameter, is usually designated in fractions of an inch or in millimeters. Differing from the musket, most modern guns are rifled, with a series of grooves spiraling along the barrel; exceptions include smoothbores on tanks, AFVs and some artillery.

In a gun-type fission weapon the "gun" is part of a nuclear weapon. The projectile is fissile material that is fired and captured inside the device. In the case of nuclear artillery it should not be confused with the gun that fires the whole warhead.
